Kunjip for Kimchi

Noise, spice, beer and a mysterious stain on my shirt

When smatterings of food plans were being made, I had almost decided to go home. Glad I didn’t.

Noise, spice, beer and a mysterious stain on my shirt

When smatterings of food plans were being made at Desmond’s Tavern earlier in the night, I was planning on going home. One because I was already out later than I had planned and two, I felt like a fifth wheel.

Our group was down to two couples and me, but I was told not to feel that way and they convinced me to stick around. I was glad too since we ended up at Kunjip (9 W 32nd St, NYC). Now I know there are a ton of great Korean BBQ spots in this part of town. After all, this is K-Town–for the uninformed, that’s Korea Town. I knew it would be a good night of eating when, as soon as I sat down, some mysterious sauce stained my shirt.

Much like other spaces in the area, Kunjip is a bustling racket of sizzling food and drink. I do confess that a lot of the night from this point out is a bit of a blur. There was a whole lot of yummy goodness on the table. The one thing that is clear in my memory is the Kimchi Chigae. A spicy casserole of kimchi and pork delight. I washed it down with a cold beer and wiped the waterfall of sweat off my brow.

Soon it was out into the pouring rain to go home. The spice and fun times fresh in my blood kept me dry. Well OK, it was more the umbrella. Well OK, it was a very tiny umbrella so basically only my head and shoulders stayed dry.

I don’t mind such annoyances when they come at the end of such a fun night.
