My Hoboken Music Award Nomination

Imagine my surprise and delight! I am truly humbled and honored to have been nominated for an HMA!

So, I got this press release the other day. As I was reading about this amazing plan to honor local musicians, I checked out the MySpace page. I had to do a double take.

I am truly humbled and honored to have been nominated in the category of ‘Outstanding Contribution to The Local Indie Music Scene’. It’s a thrill to be named among the finest and most loyal supporters of music in the local scene.

The full list of nominees in that category are:

  • Chris Gibson (Upstart Studios)
  • Jersey Beat Magazine
  • BlowUpRadio.com
  • Stephen Bailey (Hey, that’s me!!)
  • Jared-WRSU 88.7FM
  • Rolando Gabriel
  • Beel Media
  • John Seymor

For details on how to vote, and to see the rest of the categories and nominees, go to myspace.com/hobokenmusicawards

The HMA’s promise to shine a light on all the talented bands and singer/songwriters from the area and help create awareness among its participants, the public and the media. Awards are being considered in a dozen categories.

  • Singer/Songwriter Male-Local
  • Singer/Songwriter Male-Surrounding Area
  • Singer/Songwriter Female-Local
  • Singer/Songwriter Female-Surrounding Area
  • Band(pop/rock/alt)
  • Band(hard rock/metal)
  • Outstanding Contribution to the Indie Music Scene
  • Music Video Production
  • Indie Music Publication
  • Hip-Hop
  • Childrens Music
  • Peoples Choice Award

The HMAs are the brain child of David Entwistle, a Hoboken resident, booking agent, sound engineer, host of the popular weekly “People’s Open Mic” at the Goldhawk and musician. David himself should be on this list of nominees. He has seriously done more for this scene that just about anybody else.

I have to say, in all honesty, even if I was not nominated, I would urge everyone to support this. In a world of American Idol and Top 40 radio that rarely plays more than 15 songs, we need to keep local music scenes alive and growing.

This whole wonderful thing will culminate in a jam and party on April 25th, 2009 at The Goldhawk (936 Park Ave, Hoboken,NJ). Don’t miss this celebration of indie music and those who create it. And don’t forget to vote!

i read the recent article about david entwistle on the H-Mag website and…. what a dumb article.
How dumb a guy responds with as a hobby he enjoys the hobby of “introspection”. that’s not even a hobby, duh. “let me try to come off as smart and brilliant”. Ha, nice try. this guy sounds like he’s so much full of shit and just utter dumb nonsense pours out. if “introspection” is his hobby then he doesn’t do it often enough because a hobby is unlike a way of life but more so like playing baseball, tossing a football or doing something recreational which you can do daily but is very limited, like his brain and the way he tries to come off being. a way of life is something you practice daily that just doesn’t happen to poop in your brian and think, “hey i think this sounds cool for me say”. a hobby is something other than that. he tries way too hard to come off as someone who is ground breaking, bright, sensitive, worldly, philosophical blah blah blah. he works an open mic… i’ve done a little looking up of this guy to find out that he’s not exactly who is wants everyone to think he is. do your research! i live in hoboken to know about this guy than what he tells people. see you at the next open mic, ha!

Thank you for taking the time to comment on a two-year-old article. Of course you have a right to your opinion, just as I have a right to disagree.

First of all, if you’re going to try and criticize a person’s level of intelligence, you should really take the time to check your spelling and grammar. Second, you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.

You say you live in Hoboken? How long have you lived here? How long have you been supporting live music here? I’ve been a part of the Hoboken scene for over twenty years and I’ve seen my fair share of music promoters and performers come and go.

Yes, Dave runs an open mic, but that’s certainly not all he does. He has also booked more original live music in Hoboken over the last nine years than just about anyone else. He’s a performer and a producer who has recorded many local musicians in his studio.

You say you know about this guy and what he tells people? Judging from your little rant, I can tell you … no you don’t.

yes i should have spell checked before sending.
i’ve lived in hoboken my entire life although have recently moved out of hoboken into manhattan because i have my own finance business.

there is a fine line with regards to reading and absorbing literature such as philosophy and books of spirituality to better oneself and another in practicing what you read when you preach. he does a really good job at creating an image of who he wants everyone to think he is. for example if one is modest, one does not need to mention the fact that one is modest… it will be understood. now being asked to name a hobby and then he mentions introspection is bs about him being one with the world and blah blah. it’s hilarious. it’s so hilarious that i mentioned this to circle of friends and they laughed at the response he made mention of. you may know this person to an extent of who he wants you to think he is which is my point. well, you mention all such wonderful things this guy is accomplishing on a spectrum so grand that his impact is inconsequential to the grand scope of things… which i’m sure he can spiritually philosophize with you. looking at someone’s life is looking at someone’s track record of accomplishments and the not so popular lessons (failures) in life. open mics and booking bands and maybe recording several artists here and there are but a small feat of accomplishments in the grand scope of things. he’s a dumb ass and a know it all as i raise my glass of water to salute him… i think i should jump on my desk in cheer for him and say, “here here captain my captain”. he is brilliant, never met someone i’d much rather be around. can’t wait to tell the “introspection” story to just everyone i meet… you should try doing this survey as well it’s a good way to get laughs..

by the way the article is not 2 years old as you said but from last month, http://www.h-mag.com/2011/04/dave-entwistle/ . tell him to eat some wheat grass instead of smoking it and use herbal essences again, not for smoking purposes. tell him to give me a call, so we can reconnect and he can regurgitate, like a bird doth do, from the book of david and the quantum reason of being.

Actually, I was referring to you commenting on this article, the one on my website, which is in fact two years old. If you have issues with an article written on the h-mag website, perhaps you should contact them.

Anyway, as I said, everyone is entitled to an opinion. Yours just seems to be based on a single quote from a single article. If you have more deeply routed resentments to work out, then I suggest you do reconnect with him. It could be very cleansing for your soul. And, since you seem to know so much about the man, reconnecting should be easy to do.
