‘Love & Grief’ by Pearl
There are those who say there’s no real music anymore. Oh, it’s out there. They’re not doing enough to find it. The algorithms we blame for pushing garbage into our feeds can easily be manipulated. If I search for something and interact with the results, I’ll get served similar content. So I use that tactic in my favor. That’s how I found the raw, visceral, and unmistakably punk explosion of ‘Love & Grief’ by the Baltimore-based band Pearl.
This is straight forward, raw punk. This is therapy. It grabs you by the head and stares directly in your face. There’s an electric intensity to the songs. High octane guitar, unyielding drums, and deep bass set the foundation for passionately screamed vocals. The songs are relentless, adrenaline-fueled, and to-the-point. In between are low-volume vignettes that offer a space to breathe while waiting on the next attack.
Baltimore’s punk pedigree runs deep. There must be something in the air or water or city grit that cultivates an aggressive yet infectious energy. Pearl feeds on this and builds on it. Their sound is real, honest, and powerful. In these times we’re living, such music can truly be a cleansing force.
There’s also a tactical need for connection with the audience at Pearl’s core. This is not a symbolic gesture. In a June 2025 interview with bmoreart.com, singer Sienna Cureton-Mahoney says, “I prefer no stage and no distance. I enjoy being with the audience. Sometimes being elevated on a stage can feel lonely, like all my friends are down there and I want to join them.”
‘Love & Grief’ (20/20 Records 2026) is available on Bandcamp.
