A beautifully haunting new single that tells a heartbreaking tale about falling out of love
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; I have very talented friends. I recently received a text from my dear friend, singer/songwriter Allison Strong. She told me about her latest single called ‘Weightless’ and it is just fantastic. It’s a beautifully haunting song that tells the heartbreaking tale of someone falling out of love. Her voice is steeped in melancholy. The song exposes a vulnerability as she tries to accept and explain an aching we’ve all felt.
The lyrics are powerful throughout but the line that hit me hardest was, “And I love you but I don’t want to anymore.” Knowing that it’s time to let go while fighting that urge to stay is heart wrenching and powerful. The underlying music supports these emotions, even accentuates them. There’s a lot of air in the production. The simple, mostly acoustic arrangement allows the lyrics room to grow. There are hints of country mixed with a bold vocal range reminiscent of Joni Mitchell.
You can sense the drama in the first swelling notes and the sad yearning in Allison’s voice. The imagery of being weighed down and wanting to be let go. The very first time she sings the line, “If I let you go will I float above the pavement,” the music all but stops on the word ‘pavement’, driving home a deep need for release. As the song builds, you realize that she is longing for the possibility of hope buried in the despair.
Recorded at Bear in a Barn NYC, Allison is accompanied by producer and multi-instrumentalist Brett Parnell on bass, mandolin, keyboards, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and banjo and Evan Mitchell on drums. The vocals were produced by April Bender. The song was mastered by Tommy Harron at Armazi Productions.
‘Weightless’ is the title track from Allison Strong’s EP which is slated to be released in August. I can’t wait.
