I’m very happy that a favorite Wildwood Crest eatery of our past is succeeded by this delightful, wholly new space
For years, my family and I would eat breakfast at The Olympic Island Beach Restaurant in Wildwood Crest. I had heard that the owners were looking to retire and that the business would be changing hands this year. I loved this place with it’s old-school rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia and music as well as the tasty comfort of the food. So I was concerned about the change. I’m happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised.
Located in the Olympic Island Beach Resort, Sak’s Pancake House and Grille (6401 Ocean Ave Wildwood Crest NJ) opened July 4th weekend, just a few days prior to our visit. I’d later learn that new owners the Sakolas family have a long history in the local food industry. In retrospect, this made total sense judging by how amazingly well run the place is. The atmosphere was light and fun. Service with a smile is not a cliche here, it is at their core. It was evident that the staff actually enjoyed being there. More proof that the family has been at this game for a while.
The decor is very different now. Gone is the kitschy fifties theme, replaced with a clean, more minimalist contemporary look. Soothing pastel colors and a modern nautical feel, all designed by the owner and her daughters. Wire sculpted fish-shaped lighting. Sea shell wall art. Quirky, fun elements sprinkled about. With all of these changes, I’m very happy to say that the music is the same. The juxtaposition of teeny-bopper hits from rock ‘n’ roll’s early days against the new, modern setting brought an instant smile to my face.
I ordered the shortstack of their Cookies and Cream Pancakes with plenty of whipped cream. No need to add syrup or butter. Delicious and just sweet enough to tame any craving without coming across as an overpowering dessert. It was just right. Their tea was Yunnan Breakfast Organic Tea by La Colombe. A really nice, full-bodied Chinese blend with a rich malty sweetness and lemon zest. Like a heftier English Breakfast blend. The prices are not bad considering the high quality and the fact that sales tax is included. My pancakes and tea came to $19.00. I treated my mom to an early birthday breakfast. Her order of a shortstack of the Golden Brown Pancakes and a coffee — also by La Colombe — came to $16.00.
I’m very happy that a favorite eatery of our past has been replaced by a such worthy successor. In talking to the new owner, I discovered that the previous owner worked with them to help with the transition. I’m also happy that we could share in welcoming them to the area. This breakfast was a delight and I can see a very bright future for Sak’s Pancake House and Grille. I will definitely be back.
