Music Spotlight: ‘Mr. NoOne (Pt.2)’ by MJT

Soul meets rock. Jamband meets blues. Prog meets pop. All accented with a jazz sense of dynamics and improvisation.

Sometimes the internet can throw you a curveball. Send you right off track, but in a good way. There I was, working on a piece of content for a couple of days. Doing my usual routine of walking around Hoboken, listening to an album, taking notes, and whatnot. I was all set to finish that piece today when I decided to take a break. In a moment of innocent scrolling, ‘Mr. NoOne (Pt.2)‘ by MJT (2025) came across my feed. A band of brothers hailing from Long Island, NY. Matt, David, and Jordan Godfrey make up this absolute powerhouse of a trio.

I was completely blown away by the raw passion, athletic musicianship, and the sheer heft of their sound. Soul meets rock. Jamband meets blues. Prog meets pop. All accented with a jazz sense of dynamics and improvisation. Many bands can write a good song. Others can play the shit out of a song. MJT do both and they do it very, very well. Flawless songwriting and the skills to deliver. The immense size of the sound coming from three guys is simply mind numbing. The band describe it as progressive alt rock, but it goes much further than that.

The vocals of David reach right to your soul, covering a range of emotion and tone from subtle to intense. The guitar (also David) cuts like a chainsaw and the solos are pure magic. Jordan on the drums keeps it all grounded while at the same time careening through the sound. The band’s bio describes Matt’s ambidextrous virtuosity as he plays the synth bass and keys simultaneously. Think Ray Manzarek playing for Deep Purple. The bass holds down the low end, every so often visiting a higher register to accent the guitar and keys. And those keys? My god do they sore with full, rich chords and fluttering melodic lines. And the production is brilliant.

You can stream ‘Mr. NoOne (Pt.2)’ on Spotify. There is a ‘Mr. NoOne (Pt.1)’ and several other singles on there as well. Check out their Spotify Profile. They also have a back catalog of older albums available on Bandcamp. And yes, they are every bit as worth a listen as this album.

Cheers!
Stephen
