Sempé is a Cuban-born, French-American artist who works in two very distinct yet equally compelling abstract styles of painting. Bold, bright geometric pieces and warm, subtle lyrical pieces. Both of these styles incorporate spiritual themes, esoteric elements, and colorful symbolism but approach them from different creative directions.

‘Mosaic’ by Sempé (Acrylic on Canvas)
The first pieces I saw were from her geometric abstract collection. Precise edges, cutting lines, and bright colors denote an intriguing image of strength. Each piece offers a striking visual effect. There are two constants featured in her work. The color orange which symbolizes vitality and creativity and the orb shape which symbolizes the Rose of Jericho, an emblem of resurrection and spiritual transformation.

‘Holy Light’ by Sempé (Oil & Acrylic on Canvas)
Her lyrical abstract pieces are a very different but equally enticing discipline. In these, Sempé employs another artistic language of smooth brushstrokes and subtle shading. These pieces are warm and dreamlike. They too are striking yet offer a calming quality. The color orange and orb shapes are also present, acting as a bridge between the two styles.
“Both art and the soul are eternal” – Sempé

‘Harmony of the Spheres’ by Sempé (Acrylic on Canvas)
Born in Cuba, Sempé began creating art at a young age in the city of Matanzas. She would relocate to France as an adult where she became immersed in its art scene. While there, she participated in the restoration project of the historic castle Chateau du Beyrat, restoring frescos and coats of arms. She also designed new outdoor elements.
Currently based in the US, she is revered in the artworld. Recognized as one of the few internationally active Cuban female artists working in the lyrical and geometric abstract styles. Her work has been exhibited around the world alongside the likes of Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalí, Yayoi Kusama, Carmen Herrera, Wilfredo Lam, and many more.
